Benjamin Spies

Ben advises national and international companies, particularly in the IT sector, with a focus on data protection, e-commerce, domain law, as well as telecommunications and telemedia law. His expertise includes drafting IT project contracts, managing usage rights (especially software licenses for mobile apps), leveraging open-source software (FOSS), and implementing cross-border data protection requirements, including data transfers within Europe and to third countries. Additionally, he regularly provides counsel on IT security and compliance matters, particularly anti-corruption and data protection, as well as on outsourcing projects.

He studied law at the University of Constance, completing his first state examination in 2005. After completing his legal traineeship in Darmstadt and passing the second state examination in 2007, he gained initial experience as a research associate at a major U.S. law firm. Following roles as an attorney in U.S. international law firms and 10 years as a partner at a leading national firm, he became a founding partner of TEAL in 2025.

Ben is a member of the German Bar Association (Deutscher Anwaltverein e.V.), the Munich Bar Association (Münchener Anwaltsverein e.V.), and the IT Law Working Group (DAVIT) of the German Bar Association.

WirtschaftsWoche (2024) ranks Ben as Highly recommended lawyer in IT law.

The Legal 500 Germany (2020) recommends Ben in the areas “Information Technology – Data Protection” and “Information Technology – Digitalization”.
